Tips and Pointers on Grocery Shopping and Your Weight Loss Program

When it comes to losing weight, you will have to have a net gain or loss on what you ingest compared to what you are burning off in calories. If you are ingesting more than you burn off, then you will have a net gain in weight. If you are ingesting less than you burn off, then you will have a net loss in weight. Generally speaking, this is one instance in life where it is better to lose than gain. Your grocery shopping habits have a lot to do with your weight loss success. Here are some tips and pointers on your grocery shopping.

* When grocery shopping, it is good to be selfish.

In most cases, you are more likely to bring home junk food and other foods that are detrimental to your weight loss program if you are buying for friends and other family members. A recent study from the University of Miami found that people grocery shopping just for themselves made healthier and wiser food choices. There is a higher probability we would avoid junk foods. But, this good habit erodes when we think of others when grocery shopping.

* Make a list and stick with that list.

Before you go grocery shopping, you must be driven by a list. Make a list of healthy choices and then stick to that list- not matter how you feel. You decide what goes on that list, then your list decides what goes in your grocery cart.

* Grocery shopping is best done alone or with a spouse but not with the kids.

You are more apt to stick your list and your discipline when alone or with a spouse (who is on the same page as you). When you bring kids, there is a strong tendency that cookies and other junk food items will find their way to your grocery cart.

* Stay in the outer aisles at the grocery store.

The outer aisles are where the fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meats, and other wholesome items are. The inner aisles have the sodas, chips, cookies, and other not-so wholesome items.

* Go more often to the grocery store- rather than stocking up for the month.

You should go often because you are buying perishables such as milk, vegetables, and fruits. When you stock up for the month (or several months), you have a tendency to buy those junk food items. Also, you have a tendency to eat those items in a few days rather than for the month. That defeats the whole purpose of stocking up.

Those are some tips and pointers on your grocery shopping so that you eat better and (in most cases) eat less in order to lose weight and stay healthy.
