Focusing Your Efforts to Optimise Fat Burning

Although it may be near impossible to obtain a unanimous agreement on the best training method for this or that, there is a general murmur of consensus in the health and fitness industry when talking about the emphasis that needs to be placed on exercise versus nutrition, where fat loss is the primary objective. That consensus is as follows. For best results in fat loss:
fat burning

FOCUS 70% EFFORTS ON NUTRITION AND 30% EFFORTS ON EXERCISE.

It is true that our exercise efforts will not produce the fat loss results that we desire unless a significant emphasis is placed on nutrition. Our efforts would not be wasted in that there are so many benefits associated with exercise on its own - for example; decreased risk of disease, increased muscle strength and endurance, increased bone mineral density, increased energy levels, improved distribution of blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, improved functioning for activities of daily living... the list goes on. However, should your primary objective be fat loss, very few people will achieve this goal through exercise alone.

I propose a few changes to the areas of focus that are required in order to achieve sustained fat loss for the majority of people. You may already have 1 or 2 of these areas 'in check' so you can therefore focus on those that require the biggest improvements. The focus is as follows:

Nutrition - 40%
Exercise - 20%
Sleep - 10%
Stress - 10%
Thoughts - 10%
Relationships - 10%

You might be wondering how on earth your stress levels or thoughts are going to affect your ability to burn fat. That's a story for another day, but for now just trust me that they do.

Rate each section above from 2-10, with 2 being 'terrible' and 10 being 'excellent/optimal'. Rate yourself as you are now. Which area(s) came up with the lowest score? Focus on making changes to these ones first.

Although some sections have been assigned a smaller percentage of 'importance', DO NOT under-estimate the power of the 10% or 20% they represent. The sections each affect one another and if any one area is completely neglected, long term results will not be achieved. So always focus on the area(s) with the lowest score first. Pump a little bit into this area, ensuring it's something small enough to sustain long term, then move on to improving the other areas bit by bit. Reassess each area regularly and change your focus depending on what is happening in your life at that time.
