Cabbage Soup Diet Produces Short Term Results

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a drastic program that relies on consumption of a low-calorie cabbage soup over seven days. Dietitians consider it a fad diet of uncertain origin that produces only temporary results.

The diet claims a weight loss of up to 10 pounds within seven days. Cabbage is described as having special fat burning properties. Nutrition professionals criticize both of these propositions.

Dietitians highlight that it is virtually impossible for a body to shed that much fat tissue in a week. Most weight loss during the diet will be due to the removal of fluids, not fat, from the body and therefore likely to be temporary.



Be advised that due to the lack of nutrients your body receives while on this diet, there is a chance you may feel light-headed, weak and you might also find you have difficulty concentrating. It is important to advise your physician if you plan on starting a new diet.

Dietitians also dispute the claim that cabbage has fat burning powers. There is no evidence to support this proposition.

Cabbage soup forms the core of each day's eating plan. Various recipes for the soup may be used, one version being:

  • 1/2 head green cabbage (diced)
  • 6 fresh tomatoes (diced)
  • 6 large brown onions (diced)
  • 2 green peppers (diced)
  • 1 leek (diced)
  • 1 bunch celery (diced)
  • 1 bunch Italian parsley (finely diced)
  • 6 cloves of garlic (finely diced)
  • 1 liter soup stock (chicken or beef according to taste)
  • 2 stock cubes (chicken or beef according to taste)
  • Salt, pepper and other seasonings (according to taste)

Add olive oil into a large pot and lightly saute all vegetables except cabbage and tomatoes. Ensure soup stock has been refrigerated and all congealed animal fat then removed. Add soup stock, cabbage, stock cubes, seasonings and about nine cups (two liters) of water, more or less according to taste. Simmer to tenderize all ingredients to taste. Add tomatoes and simmer gently for about three minutes.

In addition to soup, the diet also allows a range of other specified items such as tomatoes, meats, vegetables and skim milk. However, it emphasizes that weight loss will be greater if soup is eaten instead of other allowed foods.

The diet calls for a one-week-on, two-weeks-off pattern. During the two-week off period, the dieter returns to normal menu preferences. This pattern can be repeated any number of times depending on a dieter's overall weight loss goals. Since this diet is so low in calories, it is recommended that it not be followed long term since it can be more harmful than beneficial.
