Take My Grocery Store Tour and Mark Off The Items On Your Paleo Shopping List

Now one of the questions people have when first learning about the paleo diet plan is how to shop. In order to eat differently you must shop differently so I have decided to give you an Ezine tour around your local grocery store so that you can take care of everything on your new paleo shopping list. Now if you are one of those people that like to go through each and every aisle of the store to check out the latest microwave dinners, this may be a little intimidating, but don't worry, we will get through it together.

The Produce Sections

Now the first section on your paleo shopping list is the produce section. Unfortunately for many people, this area of the store doesn't get all the love and attention it deserves, but not for long. So the first thing you want to put in your basket is a nice variety of colorful veggies here are some examples of the items I typically get:

-Dark greens for salads such as a couple bunches of dark greens like chard, baby spinach and spring mix
-Broccoli, bell pepper, squash, cucumber to use as raw salad topping or cooked stir fry dishes
-Onions and garlic which are perfect for adding good flavor to just about anything
-Root veggies for stews and heavier dishes such as beets, sweet potatoes and carrots

You may also want to get some fruit to snack on through out the day or to make a fruit shake. Please note that fruit like apples and bananas and root veggies like beets and carrots are very high in sugar so don't over do it. Always pick organic and locally grown over other options.

The Dairy Section

Now for the dairy sections. Most people on the paleo diet don't eat dairy and if they do high quality, full fat, properly fermented options are encouraged. Although I don't eat cheese and milk, butter is on my paleo shopping list. It's great for cooking because it doesn't get toxic at hot temps like olive oil. Always make sure to get butter from grass-fed cows. It's also important to note that Vegetable Oil is not recommended as it increase the risk of having heart related health issues.

Oh yeah, before you leave this section don't forget your eggs.

The Meat Section

Now we are in the place where all the animal protein happens! For the week I usually get things like wild sole, free range chicken, grass fed lamb and/or beef depending on what's available in the stores. It's very important to buy meat products from healthy animals that are raised as naturally as possible. Unfortunately most markets don't carry many options of grass fed, wild or free range products so you may have to go to a health food store or a butcher that focuses on producing good quality healthy meat.

Skip Most Center Aisle

Now usually people spend way to much time in the center aisles filling their baskets up with processed foods like, pop tarts, low fat frozen meals, rice-a-roni, cookies, crackers etc. These items are NOT on your paleo shopping list so stay clear! You may visit the center aisles briefly however, for the following:

-Olive oil which is a great topping for cooked foods and salads
-Coconut oil which great for cooking, even on high temps. I love using it for squash and chicken.
-Ghee or clarified butter, also used for cooking
-Nuts and seeds which are great for a snack or for salad toppings
-Seasonings and dried herbs, some of my favorites are basil, dill, cumin, coriander and paprika

So there you have it, your paleo shopping list. Follow it, make dishes with it, love it and see the results!
