Is a 1000 Calorie a Day Diet Safe?

Many people want to lose fat on their bodies at some point. Controlling weight is something that can be fairly difficult to do. Many people to lower weight and maintain weight will go on a calorie restricted diet to get results.

1000 Calorie a Day Diet

The basic concept is that when you take in fewer calories, typically you will lose weight. If you get too many calories, typically you start to gain weight. Some have the idea of going on a 1000 calorie diet to try to speed up the weight loss process. The idea is to get even less calories per day creating more of a deficit to get faster weight loss. Is something like this really safe?

The first concern is muscle loss. Whenever you get too few calories day after day, eventually the weight that you start losing is muscle mass. This is a huge problem in the long run. You need muscle mass to passively burn calories. If you lose this muscle, you will eventually get less and less results and have a much higher chance of gaining back the weight if you ever go back to a normal diet.

A second concern is nutrition. Can you get all the nutrients that you need in one day by only eating 1000 calories? If you ate very nutrient dense foods, it is possible, but you would have to be very careful about what you ate.

Something else to consider is whether eating like this really works. In the long run people eating less than 1200 calories are not really getting any more positive results than those eating around 1200 calories or more in terms of weight loss. If there are no long term results that are extremely positive, it might not be worth the muscle and nutritional risks.

It might be better to start off with higher calories and creating a bigger calorie deficit by exercising and actually burning calories. This way you can eat more to get better nutrition and actually grown muscle instead of losing it.
