Why You Need Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids in Your Diet!

Lately it seems that people everywhere are talking about supplementing with fish oil. You may be wondering why this is the case. The key beneficial component of fish oil supplements is Omega 3 essential fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fatty acids are in the same family as Omega 6 EFAs. In the western world, most of us get more than enough Omega 6 EFAs in our diets, but few people get enough Omega 3 EFAs. This is unfortunate because while Omega 6 promotes blood clotting and the growth of tumors, Omega 3 essential fatty acids have been proven time and again to have numerous health benefits.

It is important to understand that it is not that Omega 6 EFAs do not have their purpose. They do. The challenge comes in when the level of Omega 6 EFAs so heavily outweighs Omega 3's. The proper balance is critical to maintain proper body functions.

One of the best ways you can ensure that you are getting enough Omega 3's, is by taking supplements. Fish oil is found in mackerel, tuna and salmon. Flaxseed, nuts, avocados, chia seas and sea weed are also sources of Omega-3's. While you can certainly get omega 3's by eating fish, thanks to the toxicity of our oceans is is generally agreed that to get sufficient EFAs in your diet through eating fish alone you would place yourself at risk of mercury toxicity.

The benefits of Omega 3's are numerous. Research has shown that by getting enough Omega 3 essential fatty acids in your diet, you are lowering your risk of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and heart disease. It has also been shown as an effective deterrent against high cholesterol and coronary artery diseases. There are numerous studies that have been conducted that show that Omega 3's can effectively play a role in the prevention of: arthritis, Alzheimer's, alcoholism, Parkinson's, bipolar disease and depression.
