Lose Weight With the Big Breakfast Diet

As schools let out across the country and temperatures rise, many nature lovers are rushing to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air at the beach. But with this enthusiasm to spend time outdoors in summer clothes comes the added burden of weight loss and management. A new diet plan that is gaining popularity is called the "Big Breakfast" diet and it shows to be a new thought process on the dieting scene.

What is the Big Breakfast Diet?

By eating a large breakfast of 600 calories that is rich in carbohydrates and protein, dieters are able to lose more weight and sustain the diet to achieve long-lasting results. According to a recent study conducted by the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, findings show that a group of dieters who ate a 600 calorie breakfast in the morning then later in the day ate healthy meals that consist of 640 calories, lost an average of twenty-one percent of their body weight over a period of four months. The diet allows participants to consume 22 grams of fat, 58 grams of carbohydrates, and 47 grams of protein totaling 1,240 calories for the entire day.

Most people don't hesitate starting a new diet. But keeping on a diet during the busy summer months is a challenge. And the theory behind the Big Breakfast diet is that by eating a large meal early in the day, there is less of a chance to impulse eat.

The American Dietetic Association spokesperson, Joan Salge Blake, RD, said the findings make "perfect sense". The big difference between conventional dieting with a low-carbohydrate menu is that after the eight month timeline had passed, the dieters on the Big Breakfast plan continued to lose weight while low-carbohydrate dieters began to re-gain the weight previously lost.

How is the Big Breakfast Diet Different?

The new plan is not common by any means. Omitting breakfast is a widespread weight-loss strategy, however it has been shown that skipping breakfast is not a healthy way to start the day. Breakfast is essential for both physical and mental health, and this new research shows that by eating a stick-to-your-ribs meal early in the morning, people can actually shed pounds.

According to the results of a study conducted at Vanderbilt University, women who had previously skipped breakfast then later changed their daily routine to include breakfast lost twenty-eight percent more weight than before. The study was conducted on a group of women over a twelve week period. In addition, over seventy percent of the people enrolled in the study kept the weight off for more than twelve months.

History of the Big Breakfast Diet

The Big Breakfast diet is a surprisingly simple way to lose weight. The diet was first presented by Dr. Jakubowicz of Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been recommending the diet for over 15 years, but only recently has the diet gained worldwide recognition. Dr. Jakubowicz expressed that a customary low-carbohydrate diet increases appetite and reduced metabolism, which means that women on a low-carbohydrate diet may initially lose weight, but later gain the weight back. Indeed, a study conducted on obese women who infrequently exercise demonstrated that the Big Breakfast diet is more effective that low-carbohydrate diets.

What Type of Breakfast Should I Have?

A healthy breakfast consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals or breads, dairy such as skim milk or low-fat cheeses, and protein such as hard-boiled eggs, lean meats or fish, or peanut butter. And by eating a healthy breakfast at home, it reduces the chance of eating something on the road, later, as hunger persists.

How Do I Get Started?

If you are considering embarking on the Big Breakfast diet, it is recommended that you consult with a license dietitian. A licensed dietitian will review your lifestyle and eating habits in order to plan a menu that will help you to achieve your goals. Many dieters report that after their initial consultation with a dietician, they chose to continue with the plan and lost weight using a well-thought out menu. A licensed dietician will help you to determine whether or not you can lose weight with the Big Breakfast Diet.
