What Are the Muscle Building Foods, and How Can They Help You Put on Muscle?

When you start out to build your body most people want to loose fat or weight in the process. If you are undertaking a muscle building program you do not want to be on a weight loss diet. Instead you will want to be eating muscle building foods that will help you to build your muscles and get rid of the unwanted fat. These foods come in four distinct groups. They are carbohydrates, proteins, fatty acids, and nature's own high energy drink, water.

Many of the diets today stress either low carbohydrates or zero carbohydrates for quick weight loss. When looking for muscle building foods you will want to search out and eat the complex carbohydrates for your diet. They will provide you with the energy you will need to do the repetitions necessary for muscle growth. The complex carbs are slow releasing and provide the energy when it is demanded. On the other extreme are the simple carbs such as found in fruit juices and energy drinks. These provide quick energy through an insulin spike and should be used around workout times. If not used immediately they will be taken by your body and stored as fat.

Your second muscle building foods group is protein. These are the foods that you will need to add the bulk to your body. And not just any protein will work. They must contain all the essential amino acids. Good sources are chicken breasts, cottage cheese, soy protein shakes, tuna, turkey, and yogurt. A complete protein should be eaten with every meal to build your strong muscles. Finally, do not ignore the essential fatty acids in your muscle building foods. One that we hear a lot about today is the omega-3 fatty acids. They can be found in cod-liver oil, flaxseed oil, and olive oil.

While some people do not think of water when it comes to muscle building foods, it is one of the most essential. The key word is water and not liquids. While soft drinks and liquor may be refreshing they do not have the same healing properties as pure water. As the muscles in your body get healthy they will be sloughing off the toxins that have built up over the years. Water helps to flush the toxins out of your system and keep your body clean. You should try to drink a minimum of eight full glasses of water a day. More if you are thirsty.
