However, most agree that detoxifying for a 24 hour day is an acceptable option to allow the body to rebound and initiate a natural ongoing detox program that includes high levels of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber.

If you are considering a detoxification program you must be careful. There are, literally, hundreds of programs and products on the market advertising themselves as the "answer" to successfully detoxifying. But staying on a detox program for extended periods can leave you much worse off than you were before for two reasons. First, because you are not giving your body the whole range of nutrients it needs to operate properly. Second, the commercial products depend on introducing chemicals into your digestive system that are going to be very uncomfortable.



Instead of investing in a commercial detox diet plan, nutritionists favor a gradual approach by increasing fruits and vegetables in your diet, until you are eating the recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables. By doing this you create a win-win, because the additional fruits and/or vegetables will naturally aid your body's digestive system and assist in the natural elimination of toxins. And, you are not only giving your body a wide-array of vitamins and minerals you are building healthy eating habits as well.

If you make the commitment and maintain eating healthy foods, your body will detoxify naturally. I promise that you will feel better not having to go through a heavy detox which is always harsh on your body, causing bloating, gas and overall discomfort.

As is the case with most health plans, the trick though is to stick to it. It will not do much good to eat fruit and vegetables for a day or two and then go back to a fast food diet. The key is to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables in a manner that is easy and allows for an interesting a varied menu.

Believe it or not, this is easier than you think by adding fruit and/or vegetables to your diet in the form of smoothies. Including healthy smoothies in your daily menu will also be including the fiber, vitamins and nutrients essential to a detox program and building a lifestyle habit. Healthy smoothies are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants that will maintain an ongoing detox program. Fruit and vegetable smoothies are also an excellent source of fiber which is crucial to effective digestion and natural, non-stressful detoxification. Smoothies can also be incorporated into your daily meal plans at any point. While they are an excellent breakfast, they also work very well as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack, as well as a healthy lunch and an after dinner dessert.

Really, the choice is between spending money on a harsh commercial detox product that is going to make you uncomfortable or adding more fruit and vegetables to your diet and getting the same detoxification benefits while feeling better and having more energy. The way I look at it is that the human body has been in development for a few million years and is proven to be perfectly able to take care of itself if I provide the right fuel.
